Sydney out to wrest sports crown from Melbourne?

One of the world’s most popular soccer teams and current English Premier League leaders Chelsea FC will play a friendly game against Sydney FC on Tuesday 02 June at ANZ Stadium.

Visitors will have the chance to watch the likes of John Terry, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa just one week after they battle for the Premier League title.

The news follows the recent announcement that eight-time FA Cup champion Tottenham Hotspur will play Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 30 May.

Sandra Chipchase, chief executive Destination NSW said the match, secured by Destination NSW, adds to the State’s reputation for securing sporting events exclusively to Sydney.

“In 2013 we welcomed English champions Manchester United, who took on the A-League All Stars in front of a packed ANZ Stadium. In 2014, Italian giants Juventus went head to head with the A-League All Stars in an exciting match that kept fans on the edge of their seat until the final whistle. We can’t wait for this tradition to continue with Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur matches in 2015,” said Chipchase.

The visit by English champions Manchester United attracted close to 30,000 visitors to Sydney in 2013, whilst Juventus brought over 10,000 visitors to Sydney.

In 2015, Sydney has already played host to the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing at Manly Beach, the AFC Asian Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup. This latest addition further complements a bumper sporting calendar that will include the World Rally Championships, Game One of the State of Origin Series, the Bledisloe Cup, the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2015 FIT Touch Football World Cup.
