IATA says smaller bag limits would ensure everyone on a plane could fit their carry-on luggage into the overhead bins.
For now, IATA's carry-on standard is only a guideline, though it says about 30 airlines have expressed interest in the new standard and about a dozen including Emirates, Lufthansa and Qatar jave agreed to accept the guidelines.
IATA is also working with luggage manufacturers to produce carry-on bags that meet the size limits and which will include a logo, showing the bag meets the guidelines.
