Peak season travel costs hit totals

The cost of peak-season travel is putting many Australians off travelling for a family Christmas.

A survey by cheapflights.com.au showed 80 per cent of Australians want to travel to see family this Christmas but fewer than 40 per cent have actually made travel plans because of cost considerations.

And around 20 per cent of people would like to travel to escape their families, with five per cent of respondents doing exactly that this Christmas.

Parents and children topped the list of favourite family members to visit while the in-laws dipped out with less than two per cent of people having them on their holiday travel wish-list.

More than 10 per cent of respondents said they will avoid seeing their brother or sisters.

The sense of anticipation before seeing the family was the most enjoyable factor of festive season travel, with only 15 per cent of Australian travellers saying one of their favourite aspects of holiday travel was sitting down with something to drink.
