North of England needs a bigger Heathrow - Holland-Kaye

The UK government’s hopes of making the North of England a high productivity powerhouse depend on authorities taking action on airport expansion, London Heathrow Airport's chief executive John Holland-Kaye says.

He recently cited research by Frontier Economics that claims the cost of inaction on airport capacity to the economy of the North equates to GBP710 million in lost import/export trade every year, based on the first analysis to show that flying to the UK via a hub airport abroad, rather than via Heathrow, generates less trade for the British economy.

If Heathrow were expanded, more passengers flying to and from UK regions could fly via Heathrow instead of having to fly via another international hub, he said, boosting trade by GBP1.7 billion each year.

“The Government is going to struggle with the 'Northern Powerhouse' idea if a third Heathrow runway isn’t built to support the region’s existing connectivity. To rebalance and strengthen the British economy, the UK needs a domestic hub airport that can compete with our unconstrained hub rivals abroad."
