Juneyao to join Star Alliance

China's Juneyao Airlines plans joining Star Alliance as a connecting partner (and not a full member) ahead of opening routes to Australia, North America and Europe by 2020.

"Putting our networks together allows us to cover the whole globe," Juneyao vice president of marketing Yu Chengji said.

The Shanghai-based carrier currently operates domestic routes and short-haul international flights to neighbouring countries such as Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

The agreement with Star Alliance, which will come into effect from the second quarter of 2017, had been years in the making,

Star's ceo Mark Schwab said. Juneyao had been concerned that it was not ready to become a full member, which would require a significant investment from the airline.
