American's US$1.6m fine shrinks to US$695,000

USA-based American Airlines has been fined US$1.6 million for leaving planes too long on the tarmac, but it appears the carrier will only pay US$695,000 after credits are applied.

(Federal aviation rules say domestic flights can't sit on the tarmac for more than three hours without at least giving passengers a chance to deplane.)

In American's case the Department of Transportation (DoT) credited the carrier with US$602,000 for compensation that was provided to passengers on affected flights and another US$303,000 for acquiring and maintaining a new surveillance system at the Charlotte and Dallas-Fort Worth airports.
The remaining US$695,000 will be paid to DoT.
