Tourism playing key role in South Africa

South African business and leisure tourism is being touted as a 'saviour' for the country's economy after nine million visitors arrived last year.

This was an increase of more than one million compared to the 2015 figures, equal to a 13 per cent growth in tourism arrivals.

Tourism spend also was higher, according to the Department of Tourism, which says during the first months of 2016 foreign direct spend hit ZAR39.3 billion.

Tourism currently contributes about nine per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

It is estimated that meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) supported about 280,000 direct and indirect jobs in South Africa in 2015.
