Air Canada puts United jv back on the table

Air Canada says new legislation could make it easier for it to enter into a revenue-sharing arrangement with USA-based United Airlines on cross-border routes.
“We’re interested in pursuing a joint venture with United,” Yves Dufresne, Air Canada’s vice president of Alliances and Regulatory Affairs said. “The Canada-US bilateral air transport market is the largest in the world. We made an attempt several years ago but there were so many roadblocks.”

The carriers are members of the Star Alliance marketing group and in 2012 dropped a plan to co-ordinate cross-border services after Canada’s Competition Bureau said the venture would create a monopoly on 10 routes, hurt competition and spark “significantly higher prices”.

The new rule will examine plans to co-operate on scheduling, pricing and marketing with “public interest considerations” as well as under competition laws. Joint ventures between airlines currently are subject to the country’s Competition Act.
