Dutch airline KLM has been found guilty by a court of 'greenwashing', by making unsubstantiated environmental claims and painting “an overly rosy picture” of its sustainable aviation fuel.

The district court of Amsterdam cited misleading advertising in 15 of the 19 environmental statements it assessed during the case, including that KLM is moving towards a “more sustainable” future and statements on its web site about the benefits of offsetting a flight.

Four statements campaigners had criticised were deemed fair to use and the court also said KLM did not have to rectify the incorrect statements or warn customers that aviation currently is not sustainable.
