Pilots group calls for minimum of two pilots in the cockpit

The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) says airlines should always have 'at least two' pilots on commercial flight decks and warns that reduced-crew and single-pilot cockpits are dangerous.

AIPA president Captain Tony Lucas said: “The only safe way to fly is with at least two well-trained and well-rested pilots at the controls at all times.”

In past emergencies, the professionalism, skill and cooperation of multiple pilots working together has avoided catastrophe and saved lives, he added.

Commercial airline flights currently must have at least two pilots, but there are moves afoot to consider reduced-crew and single-pilot operations in order to cut costs.

There currently is very little public support for a change.
