The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for a major resizing and reshaping of the entire air transport value chain as airlines battle the ongoing global economic crisis. Airlines are expected to post losses of US$9 billion this year with an unprecedented 15 per cent revenue drop that will see industry revenues shrink by US$80 billion – down to US$448 billion.

UTi Worldwide has reported financial results for its fiscal 2010 first quarter that ended April 30, 2009. Gross revenues decreased 35 per cent to US$768.4 million from US$1,184.5 million and net revenues (revenues minus purchased transportation costs) were down 21 per cent to US$309.5 million from US$389.5 million.

Major Chinese airlines may be showing early indications of a recovery after they made a total profit of 1.3 billion yuan in Q1 this financial year.  Air China, for example, reported a net loss of 9.15 billion yuan for 2008, but reported a 981 million yuan profit in Q1 2009, down 5.68 per cent on a year ago.
