United pilots want 'better deal' than Delta peers

The fight by US pilots for improved pay and conditions continues, with United Airlines' pilots saying they want higher pay than their counterparts at Delta Air Lines and 'at least similar' improvements in work-life balance.


Delta's pilots' contract offers US$7 billion in higher pay and benefits.

United's contract negotiations have been under way for five years and last year its pilots overwhelmingly voted against a 'tentative contract', which the union said fell short of what members were seeking.

Union leader Garth Thompson said United's willingness to merely match Delta's pay will not be acceptable to many of its pilots as the market is "fairly competitive". His pilots also want a contract that either meets or exceeds Delta's deal in improving work-life balance.

Reuters says it has been told United proposes average 18 per cent pay increases in a new five-year contract for pilots as well as 79 quality-of-life improvements requested by the union.

United pilots picketed US airports last Friday, while Southwest Airlines' and American Airlines' pilots both have authorised strikes, demanding better conditions.
