New Channel Tunnel rules 'a problem' for travellers

The UK government is holding talks with the European Union about how to register UK travellers on Eurostar rail services from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam from later this year.

The EU Entry/Exit system is due to come into force in October, but an online app that would allow travellers to provide personal details in advance is unlikely to be ready on time, meaning passengers will have to go through what's been described as 'a lengthy process' at London's St Pancras station.

HS1, which operates the service, has warned of "additional passenger queues" and says it may be forced to cap passenger numbers.

Without the app, travellers will have to scan passports at self-service kiosks.

An HS1 spokesperson said: "We are putting measures in place to maintain a seamless journey to Europe, including introducing a new digital map to help passengers navigate to the kiosks with ease  ... but an app would help improve passenger processing times."
