Ash prompts Unite to rethink strike timing

The Unite union, which is due to have cabin crew members strike at UK carrier British Airways from this week, said on the weekend it was "seriously considering" calling off the first round of strikes if ash from the erupting Icelandic volcano shuts UK airspace.

Britain's London Heathrow and Gatwick are at risk of being shut, based on further volcanic activity in Iceland and prevailing weather conditions, according to weather forecasts.

Tony Woodley of Unite told the BBC: "You would have to be stupid to want to ground planes that are going nowhere anyway."

Meanwhile, BA is going to court this week seeking to block Unite's strike plans.
