India's safety system questioned

India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is now working to ascertain the cause of the recent Mangalore air crash that killed 158, but many in the country already are pointing fingers at inadequate flight safety controls.

One aviation safety consultant and former instructor pilot, named as A Ranganathan, said safety audits in India are a 'big joke' as they follow "a policy of you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours."

He alleged that Air India could 'take it easy' on safety because many of the country's inspectors were civil servants and not well-enough qualified to do the job.

In the Mangalore crash, one man reportedly lost 16 family members.
