Ryanair hit by bank fraud

The Irish Times says budget carrier Ryanair was hit by a scam in which about EUR4.6 million (believed to have been set aside for fuel purchases) was taken from its bank account by electronic transfer to a Chinese bank.

“The airline has been working with its banks and the relevant authorities and understands that the funds – less than EUR5 million – have now been frozen," Ryanair said.

“(The airline) expects these funds to be repaid shortly, and has taken steps to ensure that this type of transfer cannot recur."
