Liberia is ebola-free

The World Health Organisation has declared Liberia ebola free after 42 days without a new confirmed case.

At its peak, between 300-400 cases of ebola were reported in Liberia every week.

Neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone still are reporting a small number of ebola cases weekly and WHO has warned the borders between the region's countries are porous, making it possible new outbreaks could take place.

Traces of ebola found

Meanwhile, a US doctor 'cured' of ebola but re-tested after complaining of blurred vision has been told traces of the virus remain in his eyes.

Other areas of the body with high liquid content including male testes now are to be more closely investigated for residual traces of the disease before patients are cleared.

It is not yet clear whether these traces of ebola mean the carriers still are infectious - and if they are, how any new infection might be spread.
