New Ho Chi Minh City airport okayed

Vietnamese authorities have approved the construction of a new international airport - Long Thanh International Airport - to be built near Ho Chi Minh City.

The government said  the new facility will relieve the load on Tan Son Nhat airport and will be built with the aim of becoming a regional hub for airlines.

The airport will have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo a year and will cost US$16 billion.

The first phase will handle 25 million passengers a year and be operational by 2025.
