Ryanair exits Denmark for Lithuania

Ryanair confirmed Friday it will move out of Copenhagen and into Kaunas in Lithuania after attempts to smooth relations with Danish unions failed.

Ryanair’s director of personnel Eddie Wilson said Danish unions previously had destroyed Danish airlines Sterling and Maersk.

"customers want low fares and efficiency, not high costs, unionised inflexibility and inefficiencies," he said.

“This is a black day for the Danish economy,” he added.

“Here you have Danish unions who admit they don’t have any members in Ryanair, destroying highly paid jobs for Danish pilots and cabin crew here in Copenhagen with the sole effect that those jobs now get exported overseas, yet the flights to/from Copenhagen, the low fares and the competition with SAS will continue.”

Ryanair has said pay and conditions for its pilots and cabin crew was better than the Danish Collective Agreement.

Ryanair will continue to grow at Copenhagen airport, Wilson said, but all of those flights would now take place on aircraft based outside Denmark.
