US carriers post record results

US carriers American, Southwest and United have posted record second-quarter earnings on the back of lower fuel costs, though revenue growth was lower or - in United's case - down.

Southwest earned a record US$608 million in Q2 — a 31 per cent increase from a year ago, while United Continental Holdings posted a record US$1.2 billion profit.

American Airlines also posted a record Q2 result at US$1.7 billion.
