Cockpit union offers concessions to Lufthansa

German pilots' union Cockpit has offered concessions to Lufthansa in a bid to end a long-running pay and conditions dispute.

The offer includes an increase in the average retirement age and helping to lower costs.

Lufthansa now will "suggest a date for talks once it has reviewed the proposals".

Lufthansa pilots have staged more than a dozen strikes since April last year, fighting plans by the carrier's management to change retirement benefits and lower costs via expansion of its budget carrier Eurowings.

The Cockpit proposal inceases pilots' average retirement age to 60 from 58 and bases a pay deal for pilots at Eurowings on that of rival budget carriers easyJet for short-haul routes and Condor for long-haul routes.

Cockpit also has offered to reduce cockpit crew costs on long-haul Lufthansa routes to specified tourist destinations where there are not enough business class passengers to keep the routes profitable.

Cockpit says it hopes a deal can be reached by September 1.
