Insurer offers Chile ‘quake advice

Southern Cross Travel Insurance has updated advice for travellers who were affected by the Chilean earthquake earlier this week.

"For Australians in Chile affected by the earthquake, the first port of call is to contact your service providers. Airlines, accommodation providers and tour companies may provide refunds, credit notes or alter your bookings free of charge if needed.

“Before you incur any extra charges, contact your travel insurer to check what your policy covers,” said Craig Morrison, chief executive of Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI).

"If delayed, keep all receipts for additional expenditures you've incurred due to unexpected events as you'll need these to claim from your insurer where applicable."

"For those still in Australia with travel plans for Chile, first check with your travel service providers to see if travel plans can be altered free of charge if needed.

"If travel plans can't be altered free of charge, check with your insurer to assess what you are covered for before you incur any extra costs.

For those needing to claim, he said: “If you need to submit a claim to your insurer, it is essential to keep hold of original receipts for any additional expenses along with documents where available (such as itineraries) that show the cost of your original and your altered travel plans,” added Morrison.

Southern Cross Travel Insurance customers are covered if the policy was purchased prior to Thursday 17 September 2015 at 12pm midday (AEST).
