American pulls non-corporate ticketing from Orbitz

In a new round in an old dispute, American Airlines has withdrawn its tickets from on line travel agency (OTA) Orbitz*.

Merger partner US Airways will follow suit on September 1.

American said the fees charged by Orbitz were too costly and the companies were not able to come to terms on a new agreement, although: "We have worked tirelessly with Orbitz to reach a deal with the economics that allow us to keep costs low and compete with low-cost carriers,'' said the carrier's president Scott Kirby.

Orbitz for Business, the site's portal for corporate clients, will still list American and US Airways flights.

It's not the first time the two have disagreed. In 2010, American pulled its fares from the OTA as part of a fight to have Orbitz receive flight information direct from the airline instead of through global distribution systems.

*Orbitz Worldwide operates the consumer travel planning sites Orbitz (orbitz.com), ebookers (ebookers.com), HotelClub (hotelclub.com) and CheapTickets (cheaptickets.com). Also within the Orbitz Worldwide family, Orbitz Partner Network (orbitz.com/OPN) delivers private label travel technology solutions and Orbitz for Business (orbitzforbusiness.com) delivers managed travel solutions for companies.
