New York official calls for airlines to pay sales tax

New York city controller Scott Stringer has called for a change to the law so that airlines would pay sales tax on avgas.

Stringer said the 4.5 per cent sales tax exemption costs the city US$100 million a year in lost revenue at current fuel costs.

“Ending this giveaway would help New York City and the Port Authority (airport operator) secure the funds they need to modernise and green our airports, which right now are both inaccessible and major contributors to climate change,” he said.

Airlines for America, a trade group based in Washington, DC countered that commercial aviation is too important to New York’s economy to hit airlines with an extra tax.

“We believe it's in New York City's interest to create a business climate that values aviation and encourages travel and tourism to the state — not enacting unnecessary tax hikes that drive up the cost of flying for all New Yorkers,” the group said.
