WestJet launches UK-Canada budget services

Budget carrier WestJet has launched direct services between the UK's London Gatwick airport and six Canadian cities with return fares starting from GBP300.

The airline's chief executive, Gregg Saretsky, said customers receive a "very low base fare" in return for the ability to "pick and choose" the additional services they want to pay for.

"It costs GBP15 to have a hot meal and a checked bag," he said.

WestJet joins Norwegian and Wow air, both of which already fly across the Atlantic to the USA.

WestJet's non-stop flights from London Gatwick consist of year-round services to Toronto and Calgary, with flights to Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and St John's in the northern summer.
