China-made jet enters service

The first regional jet produced as part of China’s attempts to compete with Embraer and Bombardier among others has made its debut flight.

The Asian Regional Jet for the 21st Century (ARJ21-700) operated by Chengdu Airlines took passengers from the western city of Chengdu to Shanghai in two hours.

The ARJ21 is manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) China and key components including the nose, fuselage, and tail are the same as used on the Douglas DC-9 and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series of jetliners.

“The first flight of the ARJ21 signifies the first time a domestically-made regional jet has been used by a Chinese airline,” said COMAC chairman Jin Zhuanglong.

Another jet, the C919, will be marketed against Boeing and Airbus jets. The C919 is due to fly this year and enter service in about 2019.
