American defers A350 deliveries

USA-based American Airlines is to postpone delivery of 22 Airbus A350 jets amid expert commentary that says US demand for international air travel and large new aircraft is waning.

Both Boeing and Airbus signed zero orders for B777s and A380s at the recent Farnborough Air Show.

“It’s an indication that airlines are almost certainly going into a cyclical downturn,” said Sash Tusa, an analyst at Agency Partners.

“US airlines have been the most profitable part of the global airline market and if US airlines are starting to defer capacity, that doesn’t send a positive signal across the rest of the industry.”

American, Delta Air Lines and United Continental all plan to slow capacity growth on international routes.
