Cuba's airport security systems 'lacking'

In the USA, politicians are asking questions about Cuba's aviation security after committees that oversee the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) identified vulnerabilities at 10 Cuban airports that have begun direct flights to and from the United States.

The claim is that the risk of terrorists, criminals, drugs and spies entering the United States has increased and that security dogs used by Cuban authorities are street dogs that are fraudulently claimed to be trained animals.

Also, it is claimed the few body scanners at Cuban airports are Chinese-made for which no reliability data exists.

US federal air marshals are not allowed on flights to Cuba by order of the Cuban government, no TSA personnel can be stationed at Cuban airports and all local airport employees for US carriers are hired, vetted and paid by Cuba.

Despite it all, US authorities say Cuba's airports are safe for Americans to fly to and from.
