Australian families paying too much for packaged travel insurance - Choice

Choice says Australia's airlines are charging too much for packaged travel insurance because they use adult prices for children when passengers buy insurance on line instead of buying their cover separately. The differences today can be significant, with examples showing up to A$800 for a family.

Choice said Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia all charged families more than a standalone policy would cost because a direct purchase allowed anyone under 25 free cover.

Qantas says it is changing its processes: "The policy is being updated to include dependents up to 25 years of age as part of family cover,” a spokesperson said.

“Booking travel insurance through Qantas is optional and while we recommend customers purchase travel insurance, it is ultimately their choice where to purchase it.”
