Brisbane visitor numbers at record highs

New figures show Australia’s Brisbane’s tourism boom is continuing, with record highs across visitor numbers and expenditure in the Queensland capital.

Some 83,000 more international visitors chose Brisbane in the past year compared to 2015, with Brisbane leading Queensland destinations in Tourism Australia’s latest International Visitor Survey results.

For the year ending September 2016, Brisbane has achieved overall visitor numbers up 9.6 per cent, holiday visitor numbers up 14.8 per cent and expenditure up 6.9 per cent.

A spike in the number of visitors from China, the US, Canada, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong contributed strongly to that overall 9.6 per cent.

Brisbane has also put in a strong showing in the number of holidaymakers. Holiday visitors from Japan increased by 82.9 per cent, followed by Korea at 55.9 per cent and Hong Kong not far behind at 43.7 per cent.

Lord mayor Graham Quirk said these record results across all tourism categories was fantastic news for Brisbane and a testament to the city’s growth.

“We expect international visitor numbers will continue to grow in the near future as Brisbane plays host to a number of major events, world-class conventions, enhanced airline connections and accommodation incentives,” Quirk said.

“Summer 2016-17 will see more visitors flock to the capital for a number of major events including Brisbane’s first ever day/night cricket Test match, the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens tournament and the Brisbane International tennis.”
