UK rail fares to be cheaper, easier to understand

The UK rail industry is promising an overhaul of train fares, seeking to simplify the more than 16 million fares on offer today for travel between the country's 2,500 stations.

The promised result will be cheaper deals for many passengers including those whose journeys involve a change of trains. For many journeys today, travellers use 'split tickets' — buying two or more tickets to obtain a lower fare. That strategy allows passengers to save more than half the through fare on some journeys.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents train companies and Network Rail, now is promising a best value end-to-end ‘through fare’ on some test routes, by combining the cheapest fares for each leg of the journey.
