Amazon patent swaps 'Just in Time' for 'Just around the Corner'

Amazon is taking the benefits of 3-D printing to heart with a patent for a clothing manufacturing system that brings fashion closer to consumers.
With large percentages of fashion clothing currently produced in emerging economies, the impact of the system on exporters, forwarders and airlines could be extreme.

The patent aggregates clothing orders that originate in different parts of the world, with cameras taking images of garments and clothes produced in batches based on customer shipping addresses and other factors.

The system also would place finished goods in Amazon’s e-commerce system.

“Once textile products are printed, cut and assembled according to the orders, they can be processed, quality checked, photographed for placement in an electronic commerce system, shipped to customers and/or stored in a materials handling facility for order fulfillment,” the patent says.

While it envisages clothing for its start point, the idea could translate to other goods.
