IHG reveals franchise property hack could affect 1,200 hotels

UK-based Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) says it believes about 1,200 of its franchise properties - all but one in the USA - were hacked last year. The other property is in Puerto Rico.
The number is a strong upward revision by the company, which earlier believed only a small number of properties had been affected.

IHG now says an investigation has indicated malware was used at front-desk payment locations at hotels between 29 September and 29 December 2016 and guests at the affected Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza properties could have had money stolen.

The attack accessed information including card numbers, expiration dates and verification codes.

IHG does not believe other guest information was stolen and has published a tool for visitors to check if hotels they stayed at are among those affected.
