Airlines may have to refund cancelled flight legs

A London, UK man has won a case that could see airlines forced to hand back hundreds or thousands of pounds to passengers who have had their reservations cancelled.
James Dove, a family law barrister, won compensation from Spanish airline Iberia, part of the IAG group.

Dove held a return ticket London-Barcelona but missed the outbound flight.

He then purchased another ticket (on another airline) and asked Iberia to keep the return leg of his original trip open.

However, Iberia followed industry practice and cancelled the whole trip because the segment was missed.

He then sought to recover the cost of the Madrid-London flight, arguing that it was unfair for Iberia to keep the money.

He accepted the airline could keep the money for the flight he missed, but contended that if Iberia decided to cancel his inbound trip as well, the airline must refund that part of the fare.

Deputy district judge Case agreed with Dove and ordered Iberia to pay back the money for the Madrid-London leg, amounting to GBP179.
The decision is likely to encourage other court cases.

Iberia has until Monday, 3 July to lodge an appeal.
