MAX crash families 'ready to fight' Justice

US Justice Department prosecutors have met with the families of people killed in the two B737 MAX jet crashes in 2018-19 that killed 346.

The relatives have been critical of the department’s 2021 deferred-prosecution agreement (DPA) trade off with Boeing that allows the plane maker to escape criminal charges related to the two crashes by meeting 'certain conditions', amending its disclosure practices and paying a US$243 million fine.

Prosecutors now could ditch the DPA (subject to approval by a judge) and say they will decide a course of action by early June, to give the families and Boeing enough notice of what they’re planning.

Paul Cassell, the former federal judge who is leading the families’ efforts to scrap the 2021 DPA deal said: “We have no idea what the Justice Department will do, which leads us to believe they’re still in bed with Boeing and are going to be moving to dismiss the charges this summer. If they move to dismiss, we will fight that motion vigorously.”
