EU moves on 'greenwashing' airlines

The European Union has opened an investigation into some 20 European airlines for potential greenwashing, saying airlines need to make clear to what extent their claims about tackling aircraft CO2 emissions - whether by offsetting or using sustainable fuels - can be substantiated by sound scientific evidence.

The EU did not disclose the carrier names (because investigations are at only a preliminary stage), but they are likely to include those named by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) in a complaint.

Industry group Airlines for Europe (A4E) said in a statement that it recognised the importance of clear information about sustainability, but that current regulations in the EU "vary significantly between countries and are still evolving".
