BA hoping crew will turn up for work

UK carrier British Airways says it is confident many crew will ignore the Unite union strike call and that it is (as it did prior to the last strike) speaking to other carriers about leasing extra aircraft and obtaining thousands of seats from other airlines.

If the industrial action does go ahead, it still will cause travel mayhem for passengers and cost BA tens of millions of pounds.

UK holiday periods and the FIFA World Cup in South Africa both potentially will be affected by Unite's strike schedule.

The first wave of industrial action is due to begin next Tuesday.
