Reding initiates EU-US values change

The European Union's Justice commissioner, Viviane Reding, wants a framework between the EU's 27 countries and the United States that protects the privacy of individuals in any legal case.

The move would impact business and leisure travellers alike.

"We want, once and for all, to have a basic fixing of the general values which are common between the United States and Europe,"

She said she thought it would take two years to achieve.

As a next step, Reding is holding talks with US Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano and US attorney general Eric Holder.
