Emirates Airline has announced a record performance for the first six months of its current financial year 2007-08 ending 30 September 2007, with net profits of Dhs 2.36 billion (US$643 million) up 99 per cent compared to Dhs 1.18 billion (US$323 million) for the same period last year.

Canada and Singapore have signed a bilateral air agreement permitting unlimited cargo and passenger airline services between any city in Canada and Singapore. The agreement does not include rights to onward destinations.

Air Berlin considering cargo arm

Air Berlin is considering entering the cargo business as part of its plan to be a European and long-haul scheduled carrier. It also is close to agreeing a bilateral alliance with a major US airline. CEO Joachim Hunold declined to name the US partner, but said the deal will be signed soon. To Asia, Air Berlin plans to fly Duesseldorf to Beijing and Shanghai. Hunold also says Air Berlin will lease three Boeing 787s in 2011 and 2012 ahead of the delivery of 25 787s. -JH

Dnata, the Middle East airport services provider, has acquired its first airport handling business in Europe, the Swiss-based Jet Aviation Handling AG. Dnata now has airport handling operations at 16 airports in six countries, including Australia, Singapore, China, Pakistan and Philippines as well as the UAE.- JH

United Airlines will commence a daily B777 San Francisco - Guangzhou, China service June 18, 2008. It will be United's sixth daily nonstop service between China and the US and will provide approximately 15 tons of cargo capacity per flight. Commodities ex-Guangzhou are expected to include electronic components, integrated circuits, printers, machinery, machine tools and apparel. Other items include time-sensitive cargo such as perishables, pharmaceuticals and temperature-controlled products.

E-freight pilot project underway

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has begun working with seven cargo airlines (Air Canada, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Martinair, SAS and Singapore Airlines), freight forwarders (DHL, Panalpina, Kuehne+Nagel, Schenker, TMI Group-Roadair, Jetspeed) and ground handling agents to move to a paper-free air cargo environment with the launch of six e-freight pilot projects. Starting today, cargo on key trade routes connecting Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and the UK will be processed electronically.
