Sialkot airport opens

Pakistan’s Sialkot International Airport is now open. Developed over 1050 acres of land and equipped to handle B747-400, A300 and 737 aircraft, estimated early cargo throughput is put at 28515 tons and passenger numbers at around 530000 a year. Sialkot has a 3.6km runway.

New Vietnam airline

The Vietnamese government has licensed the country’s first privately owned airline, Vietjet. The new carrier says initially it will operate domestic routes between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang next year and hopes eventually to offer flights to Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok. It joins the country's three state-owned airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and Vasco. -JH

Malaysian Airline’s 2007 third-quarter net profit was up 52 per cent at 364 million ringgit from 240 million ringgit the previous year. Revenue was up 15 per cent at 4.23 billion ringgit (US$1.3 billion). The airline plans to cut costs by as much as a million ringgit by 2012.
