US firms worried about import costs

US firms are reporting long-term problems with overseas suppliers in Asia and Europe. They include electrical parts from Germany, electronic sensors and controllers from Italy and a wide range of products from China. Buyers also say air freight space out of Asia to the US is tight and freight costs are at record highs.

BAWC appoints Middle East chief

British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) has appointed Shameer Nasarulla as commercial manager, Gulf, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, effective immediately.
Nasarulla will be responsible for all commercial responsibilities for the Gulf, Iran, Saudi Arabia & Kuwait market.
He has worked for BAWC for more than 10 years in the Middle East and Asia Pacific region in a variety of customer service and commercial roles. Most recently, he was account manager for the carrier in Singapore before moving to Bahrain, where he is now based.

Israel, Belgium in talks

Israel and Belgium airport authorities are negotiating a new aviation agreement that if approved, will see Belgium add a new airline to the Liege-Tel Aviv route (joining Brussels Airlines) and Israel also add another carrier (joining El Al).
Additionally, Israel wants its cargo planes to be able to stop over in Belgium en route to other destinations such as the United States and the Far East.

Airbus says Taiwan’s China Airlines has signed a letter of intent to acquire 14 A350 XWBs and has an option on six more. The order is for the A350-900 version, which will be able to carry 314 passengers when it comes into service in about four years, and it will be deployed on the Taiwan carrier’s long-haul routes to Australia, Europe and the US.

Airport officials at Huntsville Airport, Madison County, USA want Asian cargo carriers to use Huntsville as a gateway for air cargo into the southeastern United States after the airport’s west runway was extended from 8,000 feet to 12,600 feet - at a cost of US$31 million - to accommodate fully loaded 747 freighters.

Korean asked to boost Israel services

Korean Air Cargo officials have met major exporters during a visit to Israel. Director general of Cargo GSA Israel Eran Zilberman said after the visit that Korean Air Cargo had agreed to consider requests to increase capacity on the Israel Korea route.
The company currently operates two weekly 747 cargo flights Tel Aviv-Seoul on Mondays and Fridays.
