CEA shareholders vote down SIA bid

At a special meeting January 8, Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines’ (CEA) shareholders voted against accepting an offer by Singapore Airlines and Temasek Holdings to buy a stake in the airline. The vote came after Air China’s parent company, China National Aviation Holding Company (CNAH), said it would top the Singapore/Temasek offer and pay HK$5.00 against HK$3.80 as long as the meeting voted against the Singaporean bid.

Questions about the viability of sail power on cargo vessels will be answered later this month when the 10,000-tonne Beluga Skysail uses a giant 160 square metre kite to cut greenhouse gases and save up to 15 per cent of fuel costs on a trans-Atlantic journey from Bremen in Germany to Venezuela and return.

DHL flags Singapore expansion

Logistics major DHL has flagged expansion plans at Singapore by purchasing currently-leased premises -- from Singapore Airport Terminal Services (SATS) -- for S$38 million.
The 18,000 square metre site is tipped to increase DHL’s cargo handling capacity to more than 11,000 shipments per hour by 2011.

Shanghai on track for second place

Shanghai Pudong Airport chairman Zhou Chi says that based on recent annual compound growth of between 20 and 30 per cent, Shanghai will soon be the world’s second-largest air cargo hub. Zhou said the cargo throughput volume in Shanghai would increase from the current one million tonnes to at least four million tonnes by 2010.
