Air India flags aggressive air freight expansion plans

Eight Air India Cargo teams are investigating the feasibility of freighter operations to Australia, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, China, Seoul, Tokyo, Dhaka, Dubai, Doha, Amsterdam, Toulouse and New York for launch between 2008 and 2016, according to a Business Standard report, which says the only international destinations that Air India’s freighter arm serves at present are Dammam, Frankfurt and Paris. The report goes on to say that pricing will be ‘flexible and aggressive’ on any new runs.

Most airlines operating cargo services in Australia are expected to maintain the status quo on CASS billing to forwarders, following a move by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to implement changes to Resolution 823. The changes basically mean airlines within the CASS billing system can offer individual credit terms to agents.

Air freight the winner as NZ beefs up China services

From July this year, Air New Zealand will operate twice weekly direct between Auckland and Beijing, as well as three times weekly between Auckland and Shanghai.  While the immediate benefit will be Olympic Games traffic, the further strengthening of China services adds weight to the carrier’s identification of growing cargo and passenger opportunities in that market.

Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss Worldcargo has reported a sales increase of 8.2 per cent for 2007. Its passenger operation, Swiss International Airlines, carried 12.2 million passengers, an increase of 13.2 per cent over the previous year. –Jack Handley

Polar adds Osaka, Shanghai

Polar Air Cargo Worldwide is to launch a five-times weekly Chicago O’Hare-Osaka Kansai International service using B747-400 freighters from February 21, 2008.  Polar first said it would expand Japan services after the conclusion of US-Japan bilateral civil aviation negotiations in September. The Osaka flights also give Polar rights to a beyond point. It has opted for Shanghai.
