The USA Transportation secretary, Ray LaHood, is hosting a forum to discuss the state of the airline industry and ways government can help provide economic stability for air carriers. The meet comes at a time when the country’s Air Transport Association, which represents major carriers, says airlines currently are flying fewer seat kilometres than they have in a decade, have shed more than 130,000 jobs (since 2000) and lost an estimated US$33 billion in the same period.
