Planemakers usually expect payment on or just prior to aircraft delivery.
Sixty per cent of the carriers – up from 55 per cent in a previous survey – also said they didn’t think they’d be able to find a financier.
The survey included about 33 per cent of operators with more than 100 aircraft and UBS said 40 per cent of the airlines surveyed came from Europe, 25 per cent from North America and 15 per cent from Asia.

Airplane manufacturers with backlogs of already-financed aircraft may be the only companies happy with news from Swiss bank UBS that only half of the global airlines it recently polled have financing in place for aircraft deliveries due this year through to early 2010.
