Shanghai Air Cargo adds to woes

China’s Shanghai Airlines has reported a 2008 net loss of CNY1.25 billion on an 8.6 per cent lift in revenue to CNY13.37 billion after the carrier’s cargo arm, Shanghai Airlines Cargo, posted a net loss of CNY263 million. Cargo volume decreased 2.5 per cent. Operating expenses jumped 14.1 per cent year-over-year to CNY14.65 billion. - Jack Handley

Israel’s El Al Israel Airlines says a wider net loss in the fourth quarter of US$9.4 million (up from US$5.3m a year before) was on the back of cargo and passenger revenues down 11 per cent to $465.3 million.  it also paid US$35.6 million on long-term hedging contracts, when in the previous year it made US$6.7 million from hedging.
