Northwest drops Gatwick-Detroit

US carrier and Delta subsidiary Northwest Airlines is to cancel its non-stop services between the UK’s London Gatwick and Detroit, USA – operated with partner KLM - from January 11.  Parent Delta will continue to serve Atlanta and Cincinnati from London Gatwick and to serve Detroit from London Heathrow.

Yemen-based Felix Airways has launched with a single Bombardier CRJ700. Chief executive officer Mohammed Al-Arrasha said the airline would operate flights between the capital Sanaa and the southern port city of Aden, and later add more domestic services after acquiring more aircraft.

Arabia adds Kiev service

Sharjah-based Air Arabia has launched a non-stop service to Kiev, Ukraine from its main hub.  The carrier now flies to Kiev three times a week. “Ukraine is one of the fastest-growing economies in Eastern Europe, and there is considerable passenger traffic between it and the Middle East,” an Air Arabia spokesperson said.

FedEx China hub operational sooner than expected

FedEx says its new Asia-Pacific hub at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China could be fully-operational in the first half of 2009. Now in the testing phase, the new hub has made significant progress in key areas, including construction, IT, employee training, and the installation of the hub’s package and sorting system.

Russia names new airline Rosavia

The new Russian airline being launched by the Moscow city government and state-run Russian Technologies will be called Rosavia, Moscow’s mayor Yury Luzhkov said. An alternative to Aeroflot, the airline will incorporate other regional carriers, including failed regional airlines such as AiRUnion, Krasair and Samara.
