New Zealand’s Air New Zealand has reported earnings before tax of NZ$26m for the six months to December 31, 2008, down 84 per cent on the same 2007 period on revenues up 3.7 per cent at NZ$2.4 billion.
Passenger numbers fell 4.3 per cent to 6.3 million.

AirAsia X adds Europe cargo services

Low-cost long-haul carrier AirAsia X will begin cargo operations to and from Europe from 11 March when it inaugurates flights between Kuala Lumpur and UK's London Stansted. The five times weekly direct flights will be operated using an A340-300, with around eight tonne cargo capacity per flight.

Transport and logistics provider Toll Holdings reported profit after tax for the six months to 31 December, 2008 was (in AUD) $176.9 million, an 11.5 per cent increase over the previous corresponding period of $158.8 million.

Turkish B737 crashes

A Turkish Airlines B737-800 aircraft with 134 aboard crashed on landing at Netherlands’ Amsterdam Schiphol airport Wednesday, killing nine - including both pilots - and injuring dozens more. The plane crashed in a field some miles short of the runway and broke into three pieces after witnesses said it appeared to descend at “massive speed”.

Ethiopian cuts flights

Ethiopia’s Ethiopian Airlines is reducing flight frequencies and introducing smaller aircraft after experiencing reductions in cargo and passenger loads. Its six weekly flights to the US have been reduced to four and the 14 flights per week to China cut to 12.
