Virgin Nigeria exits long haul

Following on from 49 per cent owner Virgin Atlantic’s attempts to exit the airline, Nigeria's flag carrier Virgin Nigeria is to suspending long-haul services to London, UK and Johannesburg, South Africa from the end of January.

The USA’s Transportation Security Administration says nine forwarders already have achieved standards required to meet the demands of the TSA’s controversial Certified Cargo Screening Program. The program comes into play next month and initially will require 50 per cent of domestic cargo on passenger aircraft to be pre-screened.

Air France-KLM cargo in the Asia-Pacific region in December was down 29.2 per cent, from 487 RTKs a year ago to 345 RTKs. Network-wide, the carrier suffered a 20.4 per cent drop in cargo traffic.  Cargo load factor declined by 10.6 points to 59.6 per cent.

Vietnam Airlines reports that it flew more than 125,000 tonnes of cargo and carried 8.8 million passengers during the 2008 year but pre-tax profits fell to US$14 million dollars, down from US$23 million in 2007. Earnings fell even though revenues reached US$1.56 billion dollars, compared to US$1.27 billion in 2007.
