Asia helps Lufthansa Cargo achieve higher payloads

The continuing strength of the market in Asia has resulted in Lufthansa Cargo posting increased volumes and higher load factors. The cargo carrier raised transported freight and mail in the 2006 business year by 1.3 per cent to 1.76 million tonnes with the cargo load factor climbing by 2.7 percentage points to 67.7 per cent.

The Indian government plans to merge state-run carriers Air India and Indian Airlines by 31 March to enable the airline to compete more effectively with emerging airlines like Kingfisher and Jet Airways. Air India and Indian Airlines both operate aging aircraft compared to the newer airlines. The government of India said there would be no loss of jobs after the merger.

Airbus says one of the main advantages of the new freighter is the ability to switch between payload mode and range mode according to the route, maximising performance for a customised and cost-effective flight.

Freight and passenger loads improve for Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific reported a 5.9 per cent increase in passenger loads last month compared with December 2005 and, for the whole year, figures increased by 8.4 per cent. Totals for 2006 as a whole show both passenger growth and cargo growth above the airline’s rise in capacity. Last month the airline carried a total of 1,495,023 passengers, up 5.9 per cent on the same month in 2005.

United Airlines wins Beijing flight rights

United Airlines has won U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approval for new non-stop flights between Washington and Beijing. Other carriers vying for the route included American, Continental and Northwest Airlines. United is expected to begin services - using a three-class 347-seat B747-400 - within 90 days. The new service will operate as a US Airways code-share flight.
